The Wan timeline in 2026
- April 2026: Wan 2.7, with a "thinking mode" that plans the shot before generating, native audio sync, first and last frame control, and 15-second clips.
- August 6: Wan 3.0 public beta.
- August 7: Alibaba open-sourced Wan-Animate-2 under Apache 2.0, a separate character-animation model. Its timing led to confusion about Wan 3.0 being open.
- August 24: formal Wan 3.0 release.
Is Wan 3.0 open source?
No. As of late August 2026, the official Wan organizations on GitHub and Hugging Face published no Wan 3.0 model files. The most recent open-weights Wan flagship remains Wan 2.2, released under Apache 2.0 in July 2025. Wan 3.0 is reachable through Alibaba Cloud Model Studio in preview, with access approval and region-matched credentials, and through China-facing apps.
That is a meaningful shift. Wan's appeal to many developers was the option to self-host; with 3.0, Alibaba is following MiniMax and Kuaishou toward hosted access for its newest model. (MiniMax did publish H3 base weights, but with a restrictive license.)
What Wan 3.0 adds
- 30 seconds per run, with an intelligent duration suggestion and video extension.
- Rich inputs: up to 10 images, 5 videos of up to 15 seconds, 5 audio clips, or documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Markdown and more, up to 50 pages) and public web pages. Turning a product page or a deck into a video is the obvious use case.
- Faces and voices: Alibaba highlights realistic faces with synchronized micro-expressions and multilingual voice output.
- Editing of visuals, plot and dialogue, carried over from Wan 2.7.
Pricing
Model Studio bills Wan 3.0 per output second at list rates of $0.05 (480p), $0.10 (720p) and $0.20 (1080p). A full 30-second clip therefore costs between $1.50 and $6.00 depending on resolution. Compare that with per-video billing in the pricing comparison.
Wan on VideoGenAPI
VideoGenAPI currently offers Wan 2.5, with native audio, 5 to 10-second clips at up to 1080p, included in monthly plans. Wan 3.0's API is still in preview with gated, region-matched access; we will evaluate it for the catalog when access is generally available. Until then, for long clips with sound, Seedance 2.5 (up to 30 seconds) and MiniMax H3 (up to 15 seconds) cover the same need through the same endpoint.
