What happened

OpenAI announced the deprecation on March 24, 2026, giving developers six months of notice. The consumer Sora app and website had already closed on April 26. The API followed on September 24: the Videos endpoints stopped answering, and the deprecation table in OpenAI's documentation shows no replacement model for Sora.

That last point is what makes this deprecation unusual. When OpenAI retires a text model, it usually points to a newer one. For video, there is nothing to point to, so teams that built on Sora 2 have to leave the OpenAI ecosystem for this part of their stack.

Who is affected

  • Apps that called OpenAI's Videos API directly with sora-2 or sora-2-pro.
  • Products that reached Sora 2 through a reseller or aggregator, since those depended on the same upstream API.
  • Pipelines that stored Sora video IDs and fetched results later: those IDs no longer resolve.

What to replace Sora 2 with

Sora 2 was strong at three things: synchronized dialogue, plausible physics and prompts with several subjects. No single model matches all three, so most teams split the workload:

If you used Sora 2 for…UseWhy
Realistic scenes with soundVeo 3 FastNative audio in the same pass, strong environments and lighting
Action, collisions, falling objectsMiniMax H3Physics simulation is its core strength; native audio
People moving, camera movesKling 3Most coherent human motion and camera control
Premium hero shotsVeo 3.1 FastHighest Google fidelity, 8-second 1080p with audio
Fast drafts at volumeSeedance 2.0About 30 seconds per clip

Migrating your code

On VideoGenAPI every model sits behind the same endpoint, authentication and status polling, so migrating from a Sora request is a change to the model field:

curl -X POST "https://videogenapi.com/api/v1/generate" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $VIDEOGEN_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "veo3",
    "prompt": "A barista pours latte art, steam rising, cafe ambience",
    "duration": 8
  }'

Then poll GET /api/v1/status/{id} until the status is completed (see the status docs). If you were calling OpenAI directly, you also need a new key: the authentication guide takes two minutes.

Prompt adjustments that help

  • Dialogue: keep spoken lines short and give one speaker per shot. Veo 3 handles ambience better than long conversations.
  • Several subjects: describe the main action first, then secondary subjects. Sora 2 tolerated crowded prompts better than most models.
  • Duration: Sora 2 commonly produced 10-second clips. Veo 3 Fast is a fixed 8 seconds; MiniMax H3 runs 5 to 15 seconds and Kling 3 5 to 10.

Avoiding the next shutdown

The real lesson is concentration risk. A product tied to one model from one lab can lose its core feature on someone else's schedule. Routing through a multi-model API keeps the exit cost to one line of code, and lets you test a replacement before you are forced to. Our longer comparison of replacements is in Sora 2 vs Veo 3: best Sora 2 API alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

When did the Sora 2 API shut down?
On September 24, 2026. OpenAI announced the deprecation on March 24, 2026, and the consumer Sora app had already closed on April 26.
Is there an official replacement for the Sora 2 API?
No. OpenAI lists no successor model for Sora in its deprecation documentation, so developers have to move to another provider for video generation.
What is the best alternative to Sora 2?
Veo 3 Fast for realistic scenes with audio, MiniMax H3 for physics-heavy action and Kling 3 for human motion. Many teams use two of them and route by content type.
Can I still use the sora-2 model on VideoGenAPI?
No. Sora 2 is no longer available. Change the "model" field to "veo3", "minimax-h3" or "kling-3"; the rest of the request stays the same.
